On the edge of the Tibetan plateau. It is not quite as barren as it seems--the valley ahead includes irrigated fields and the sizeable town of Jharkot.

The mountains ahead are Yakawa Kang and Khatung Kang, between which lies the Thorung Lo pass—one of the highest in the world, and the most difficult part of the Annapurna circuit.
